Father’s Day has been doubly poignant for me ever since my son was born. My dad died unexpectedly in October of 1986, and so for ten years I didn’t celebrate a Father’s Day. Then when my boy came along, all of sudden I was the guy people bought gifts for. I was the honoree.

Homestyle Brew. This homemade beer machine is a Cadillac compared to the one my friend used.
In my Pennsylvania radio days in the early 1990′s, my wife and I befriended and remain good friends with a husband and wife morning team. To this day, their show tops the ratings. We really get along. We share many of the same passions. One is beer.
I consider myself an active beer drinker. By that I mean, I don’t drink copious amounts, I merely enjoy sampling brews from around the globe. On my trip to Greece this month I enjoyed a cold bottle of ZEOS, brewed in Argos, Greece. It was a robust, full-bodied pilsner. Loved it.

Ed. Note: A page from the lost diary of Simon Kadurka. Kadurka was a musician who the Soviets did not trust. They had recently rolled their tanks into the Czechoslovakian capital rounding up dissidents. Only a few entries survived and were mailed to our offices.
Prague. August 23, 1968.
It is day one and I’m in some kind of cell somewhere in the western part of the city. It’s very hot and the bed is quite firm and uncomfortable. There are rats and cockroaches. Of the two, the rats have the better sense of humor. On the plus side, one of the guards enjoys my guitar playing. I indulge him by playing Bach etudes, and he returns the favor by not electrocuting my genitals.

007, Moore style.
For the James Bond fans among you (and there’s plenty) Roger Moore was slated to portray Ian Fleming’s cool spy years before he actually did. When Sean Connery first stepped away from the role after filming 1967′s You Only Live Twice, the Bond production team offered the role to Moore. But he was already under contract making his long running TV series, The Saint.
This forced the producers to search elsewhere, with the idea of someday luring Moore into the franchise.
The next Bond film, On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, starred the unknown Australian actor George Lazenby. His turn proved unpopular. By now Moore’s obligations to TV were over as The Saint ran it’s course.

The extra fingered hand creeped me out big time. This was from the glory days of the 1970′s on WPIX in New York. An absolute classic!

Analog Heaven. This little lovely pulled in shows I wasn't supposed to receive. It was magical.
UHF. VHF. Today marks a milestone in television history. It’s the day the analog signal goes away. Forever.
I remember as a kid the stuff I would rig just to pull in stations from far away. It was a passion. It was the 1970′s and technology was yet to pass me by. I understood how things worked. I would prove to myself and my friends that my dad’s reluctance to get cable TV wouldn’t hinder my ability to get shows like “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” “Ultraman” and “Time Tunnel.” With coaxial cable and wire clothes hangers and fishing wire I’d create a sort of middle ages technology Steve Jobs would admire. I wasn’t going to let the $7.95 my dad refused to pay each month spoil my fun. (more…)

Pastitsio. The Greek Lasagna as it sometimes referred, made by my cousin in the historical village of Argos, Greece.
BOCA RATON, FL (Special to TSD After Dark) Gerofinakas. The restaurant that’s wowed Athenians for 50 years. The one that was built around an ancient palm tree. The one touting it’s world famous, delicately seasoned lamb on the spit. The spectacular chilled octopus. The succulent oven roasted potatoes. CLOSED (maybe). So that’s my review. No delicately seasoned lamb on the spit. No chilled octopus. No oven roasted potatoes.

I have a friend who loves the line “maybe in the next life.” He feels that some things just aren’t meant to happen for certain people. I guess it’s being a realist. I don’t necessarily subscribe to this point of view. I’m still optimistic (and perhaps naive) enough to think I can still get it all in “this” life. That is, except when I see something like this.
I can’t ever see myself behind the wheel of one of these. Though I’d like to.

That's a Kiefer. Kiefer Sutherland is about to embark on the craziest 24 hours of his life.
LOS ANGELES (Special to TSD After Dark) Actor Kiefer Sutherland is no stranger to trouble. As Jack Bauer, the lead character on FOX’s thriller drama, 24, Sutherland races against the clock regularly to save friends, family and planet.
But now Sutherland, who had a recent brush with the law after allegedly head-butting fashion designer Jack McCollough at the Mercer Hotel in SoHo, New York, has decided to put his abrasive, abusive persona to work for him.

Eat Well. And you do at Gerofinikas.
In the heart of Athens’ stylish Kolonaki district sits Gerofinikas. The restaurant was established in 1957 and has served generations of patrons with top flight Greek and Mediterranean delights. What it special about the place is it was built “around” a lone palm tree that is still there. It is the focal point of the dining room. It was there on my first trip as a kid, and it’s still there today.
I’m in Greece right now. And I’m going to Gerofinikas again for their magnificent seafood dishes. But I’ll really have to open my wallet and let the Euros spill out because cheap it ain’t. But it’s a must on any trip to Athens.
Full review when I return.
