As a lifetime Pittsburgh Pirates fan, I am happy too agree that Harry Kalas was simply "The Best." I grew up in Northeastern Pennsylvania, closer to Phillies country than the Western, PA Buccos. I listened to the Phillies broadcasts to hear the Pirates scores. Harry Kalas painted a picture of each game---listening on the radio was literally better than watching on television. Kalas was that damn good. It was a comfort to know that he was still around, still calling the Phillies games. I'd listen to him on trips up to my hometown. Occasionally, I'd pick up the Phillies on my better AM radios from my home near Washington, DC. Harry returned me to my youth whenever I had a chance to listen. The "comfort" is gone with Harry Kalas' passing. I put him on the Mount Rushmore of sports broadcasters, no doubt about it. His work with NFL films was/is extraordinary. Now, he's reunited with the late Richie Ashburn. They're trading memories with the Angels (no, not the California Angels, the other ones!).

Gotta jump in on this one CHE. I couldn't agree more -- weak excuse from JM. But I think there's more to the story. it just so happens that Harry Kalas, who the Phillies and the baseball world sadly lost on Monday, was also 73. Kalas, who was not a heavy man by any means died of heart disease. I know Madden knew Kalas well. He's probably thinking "Whoa, Harry was a thin guy. I'm not. I'd better run, not walk to my cardiologist NOW!"

Let's face it, Madden never met a buffet table he didn't love. He's not exactly the poster child for fitness. I think the anniversary is a "aw, ain't he sweet?" comment to appease the ladies. Personally, I think the guy's scared shitless he's gonna drop.

I can only add the immortal words of Hemmingway when he said of Montalban: He walked like a phantom in the night. Behold this Hurculean sight. Other men aspire to his greatness, but attain only pansy, nerd and dork. No one, no one my friends, can touch the fabulous Mr. Roarke.

Actually, in a weird way, I get what he's saying. Something about outspending everyone, by a mile, to win the World Series, is "sterile." You get the title, but for crying out loud, you SHOULD get the title. Anything less than winning the World Series, and you suck. I'm a Pirates fan: For me, flirting with a .500 season is the most excitement I'll have for the next 10 years. But if the Pirates actually win anything, I'll feel like it was earned, not bought. Sort of like...if you score 1000 on the SAT, it's pretty good. If you score 1500 by paying to cheat, it looks better than the 1000 on paper, but it really isn't. The Pirates playing .500 is like Corky getting 1000 on the SAT while the Yankees winning the World Series is like scoring the 1500 by buying a copy of the test beforehand and cheating during the test.

Great and touching writing. This story ironically reminds me, I have a great friend, someone I consider a hero on many levels, who 15 years ago moved from the Philly area to S Florida. Hopefully Pete will find his way to Tampa to see Pat even though he no longer wears the uniform of the World Champs!

Nice Job!!

Well, I have an idea why. When I was a kid I use to love to watch sports. In the 70's dad got transferred to Key West. I remember Dad was a Dolphin fan, even though he's from Jersey. I liked the Vikings because I thought the name was cool and one of their nicknames was The Purple People Eaters. What did I know? I was a kid, dammit. When those two teams played each other our living room was like a war zone. Dad screaming for the Fins. Me for the guys in purple.

In the late '70's I went in the army, then college. I lost track of the game. Lost track of all sports. Why? Too busy, girls, rock 'n roll. I'm not making excuses here. That's just the way it happened.

When the Marlins won the World Series I got caught up in the fever like most people in South Florida. Miami was back on the map. We were going to rule. GO MARLINS! Then they sold the team out from under the fans and I felt like I got hit with a line drive to my package.

But that's sports today. If the team isn't selling the players, the players are selling themselves to the highest bidder. How can you expect fan loyalty when the team doesn't respect the fans! It's a damn shame, that's what it is. My life is way too friggin' busy to keep track of who's who, who's playing where, who's wearing what uniform. Christ almighty. Sports use to be about enjoying the game and having some fun. Not about big business. At least for me, anyway.

So excuse me if I don't want to go to the game, pay $20 to park in the muddy parking lot across the street, sit in the hot sun and then have to pay $10 for a friggin' hot dog that tastes like shit all the while trying to figure who all these schmucks are on the field making millions of dollars while I sit in 90° weather with 100% humidity dying of heatstroke.

That's it. I'm outta here. I'm going to the beach, sit at the bar in the shade and sip on a cuba libre and maybe do a couple shots of Patron while I watch the hoochie mamas in their thongs rollerblade up and down the street. Now that's a sport I can appreciate.

chase utley has summed up the frustrtaion and elation that every phils fan felt that day - an honest exclamation of happiness!!

since i live in kansas now, i wasnt watching it live - but i watched it on youtube again and again. later, i showed my 17 year old son - he said play it again! my eleven year old thought it was great - he wants a t-shirt (he won't get it)

loved your blog entry - agree 100%. and although i would also applaud it if it were a red sock, yankee, dodger or ray, i'm glad it was a phil!

Tom,

Great point about YES WE CAN being coined by Dave Cash. I'm the same age as B Obama and remember the 76 team which coexisted with Rocky I. B Obama likes to point out he was only 8 years old when Bill Ayers was setting off bombs in the USA. What he didn't mention was he was only 16 years old when Dave Cash coined his campaign slogan.

Thanks For the Memories!

Well Angelo, as TSD's resident Phillies fan I applaude you. And thanks for the support. Every point you made about growing up rivals was spot on. Thirty years later, I've got a soft spot in my heart for the Buccos. I miss our rivalry that Bud Selig destroyed by putting your team in the wrong division.

Even at the peak of our battles back in the day, I think you'll agree the Pirates and Phillies (and their fans) did it with respect. It wasn't the flag-waving, irrational nonsense we see today with the Mets (and their fans). This was smart, exciting baseball on the field and knowledgeable fans in the stands on both sides.

Goes to show ya, Pennsylvania knows its baseball. And, like you, I hope one day -- sooner than later -- we get to go head to head again in meaningful games that harken back to an era when were at each other's throats...in a good way.
