Phillies’ Chase Utley to Wear Life Alert® Necklace for Remainder of Season

Tuesday, June 5th, 2012

The Chase is over? No one knows for sure.

PHILADELPHIA (Sportsman’s Daily Wire Service) Though a Philadelphia favorite, Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has shown rapidly diminishing range due to his chronic knee problems. The decline has mystified fans, teammates and coaches, as the former all-star has yet to play a regular season game this season.

“He’s gotten old really quick,” said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. “That’s why we set him up with Life Alert®. He trips and falls like a drunken Irishman on a skating rink – with all due respect to drunken Irishmen. If he’s all of a sudden in a prone position on the field and can’t get up, all he has to do is press the button, and help is on the way.” (more…)

Phillies First Team to Test Positive for Performance Reducing Drugs

Friday, June 4th, 2010

Please Say You're Lyin' Ryan. But he admits to using "The Cloudy."

PHILADELPHIA (Sportsman’s Daily Wire Service) The Philadelphia Phillies who’ve appeared in three straight post-seasons and feared league wide for their offensive juggernaut have quickly become a shadow of their former selves in 2010.

Initially off to a hot start with many players among the league leaders in several offensive categories, the team has suddenly spiraled into a miasma of indifference and shoddy play fueled by an anemic, almost impotent run scoring capacity.

The reason for the rapid downward spiral was revealed yesterday when team officials had no choice but to suspend several players after they tested positive for performance reducing drugs. (more…)

Don’t Let Your Team Be a Barometer for Your Life

I love Chase Utleys style of play. But this year, the hits came when the game was already decided (win or lose).

I love Chase Utley's style of play. But this year, the hits came when the game was already decided (win or lose).

Several years back I had a wild notion: If my teams had a good year, I would too.  No, I’m not talking on basing my happiness on a Superbowl title or World Series championship, I’m talking day-to-day life, like in a karma kind of way.  If, let’s say Charles Barkey dropped 35 that night for the Sixers, I’d suddenly close a deal, or get a raise.

I don’t think that way anymore.

If I did, being a fan of Philadelphia sports, I’d now be living under a bridge somewhere.  Which leads me to the Phillies…the greatest underachieving baseball team I’ve seen in 25 years.  If I’d held out hope this team could sneak into the post-season, it ended last night with another loss to the Florida Marlins. Sure, they’re mathematically still in it — and they’ll probably sucker punch me one more time with a three game sweep somewhere — but they’ll ultimately let Phillies fans down.  And THAT is why we’re Phillies fans. We’ve come to expect losing.

So, imagine if I went into every day expecting to lose in my own life. How much would that suck?  There are people out there that live and die with their teams.  I prefer to live with them, and NOT make them the barometer for my own life — anymore.  When I’m six feet under, then I’ll die with them. Which, most likely will be the year they finally win another World Series.
